The 3D Printing Engineer is responsible for supporting the materials development team and Sartomer’s customers by optimizing printing performance using a suite of photocuring 3D printers. 

 

The position requires close cooperation with a materials development team consisting of chemists, engineers and materials scientists to assess and optimize printing performance of new materials.  The role will include operation, training others to use, and maintenance of current printers as well as staying up to date with new equipment and software developments and making recommendations for printers or capabilities to add.  There will be regular interactions with customers to solve problems and discuss Sartomer’s capabilities.   The successful candidate will be serve as the company SME (subject matter expert) in photocure 3D printing processes, equipment, part design, and software.

 

While the position is based at the Sartomer Exton, Pa., site there will be interactions with Sartomer’s sites in Europe and Asia and occasional travel to conferences, customers and other Arkema sites.

 

Key Activities and Responsibilities:

 

Product and Process Development - 3D Printing (50%)

  • Work with materials developers to define printing performance of new products
  • Use CAD/CAM software packages to design parts to highlight materials’ performance
  • Modify software and hardware systems to study new product performance
  • Provide feedback and insights to improve printability
  • Assist in development of customer specific formulations
  • Produce printed parts per customer request
  • Use DOE and other statistical techniques to optimize performance
  • Explore, Identify and develop new market / application opportunities
  • Drive customers/markets development projects until full commercialization
  • Develop new printing processes and techniques
  • Participate in data analysis and organization
  • When relevant, identify, approach and engage Universities, Consulting Consortia and Entrepreneurial free agents for collaborative development
  • Works with the R&D team to develop new technologies and formulations and to adapt our current products to new applications for markets of interest
  • Provide launch support for new product programs by generating supporting documentation, demonstration tools, videos and training materials.

 

Equipment Ownership - 3D Printing (40%)

  • Maintains and operates 3D printers to ensure safety and quality
  • Trains others on safe and effective use of printers
  • Stays up to date on developments in processes, equipment, software, design and data analysis.
  • Identifies and proposes new equipment to be purchased based on technology and market trends.
  • Recognizes and acts to protect potential IP.
  • Prepares demonstration parts for conference exhibits or to demonstrate capabilities to customers
  • Identify and quantify product and process improvement opportunities.

 

End Use Promotion – 3D Printing (10%)

  • Provide hands on customer training to demonstrate proper application techniques and performance advantage of products, including optimization of customer processes.
  • Publishes articles and promotes Sartomer at industry events by writing articles, and attending conferences
  • Presents at conferences and/or conventions as a subject matter expert
  • Have competency of taking incoming technical requests for immediate response to end users or customers requesting recommendations or general technical assistance.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert by providing guidance to various groups such as R&D, Sales, Technical Service, Business Development, Marketing

 

Required Education/Qualifications

  • BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering or Computer Science with familiarity of photocure 3D printing equipment and processes  OR
  • BS or MS in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or Materials Science with demonstrated mechanical and software aptitude
  • 2-5 years industry experience.  Photocure 3D printing experience strongly preferred. 
  • Experience with CAD/CAM software packages such as Autodesk Inventor, SolidWorks, Sketch-up, etc
  • Experience with 3D printing processes, software and equipment
  • Experience with controlled automation  such as Arduino, Labview and programming (Python, MatLab) a plus
  • Microsoft Office proficient, specifically with Power Point, Excel and other computer communication programs.
