Job Dimensions:

Corporate laboratory environment with chemical, physical, ergonomic and electrical hazards. 

Work includes a variety of physical and biological conditions including, but not limited to: working with a variety of chemicals including isocyanates, acrylic acid, epoxy resins, polyols, amine, acids and bases, etc., and potential exposure to UV light. 

Design, prepare, characterize and carry out synthesis of existing or new/ developmental products (acrylate or methacrylate based oligomers/ monomers)


Key Activities:

New Product Synthesis and Characterization 80%

  • Carries out synthesis of new oligomers and monomers under the direction of an R&D Scientist or Senior Chemist
  • Uses analytical tools to monitor reaction progress, determine process endpoints and characterize final products
  • Keeps detailed notes and observations on work performed
  • Reports on work performed to supervisor or team in written or oral form including interpretation of results
  • Based on results and experience makes suggestions for improvements and next steps
  • Prepares recommendations for scale up to pilot plant production
  • Works closely with pilot plant and manufacturing teams to take developed products through scale up to commercialization
  • Develop deep understanding of Sartomer production processes and of structure-property relationships
  • Develops understanding and makes use of Arkema-KOP analytical capabilities

Presentation and Reporting: (15%)

  • Reports on work performed to supervisor or team in written or oral form including interpretation of results
  • Organize data for reporting to direct supervisor and functional management.  Explain outcomes and make recommendations for improvements or next steps.  Present results at work group and project team level, verbally and in writing. 
  • Explain project goals and status to business management and other internal customers.
  • As appropriate, participate in discussions with external customers and vendors.
  • Become conversant with overall Sartomer technologies and markets
  • Maintain complete and accurate records of experiments and results.

IP: (5%)

  • Begins to understand IP landscape and apply learnings to formulation development.


Context and Environment:

The Chemist will work in the R&D labs of the Sartomer Exton, PA site.  Corporate laboratory environment with chemical, physical, ergonomic and electrical hazards. 

There may be occasional visits to other local Arkema sites based on project needs.


  • Supports the site HES policy and complies with all regulatory and internal requirements
  • Participates in HES activities provided by site management and Arkema Inc. (e.g., Behavioral Base Safety, SafeStart, etc.)
  • Reports  all health, safety, environmental, near-miss, accident or injury incidents according to company policy.

    -           Works safely, responsibly and efficiently in a dynamic laboratory setting.

    -           Conforms to corporate and site EH&S policies and procedures

    -           Participates in site safety meetings, teams, inspections and observation programs

  • BS or MS degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science or other related technical field with 0-3 years of relevant industrial experience.
  • Communicates effectively, both verbally and in writing. Makes effective presentations within project teams and work groups
  • Conducts work activities with decreasing need for supervision.
  • Reports and interprets results and suggest improvements
  • Familiarity with chemical lab (glassware) synthesis techniques and lab scale analytical characterization.
  • Demonstrated problem solving and data analysis skills
