SITUATION IN ORGANIZATION

The R&D Manager works under the direction of the Global R&D Director -3D Printing.  The Manager will lead a team of scientists and engineers in developing new photocurable materials for 3D Printing.  Individual contributions to innovation, project management and strategy are also expected.

 

JOB DIMENSIONS

The R&D Manager is a key leader in Sartomer’s 3D Printing R&D team responsible for all aspects of new product ideation and development while maintaining safety, quality, efficiency, economics, and environmental attributes.  Strong leadership skills and ability to help team members grow and develop their career interests are required. Ability to communicate and influence across organizational boundaries and with key stakeholders is a must.

 

KEY ACTIVITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Leadership (50%):

  1. Effective team leadership and interpersonal skills to lead multiple technical projects including idea conception, project execution and implementation. 
  2. Personnel management including goal setting, appraisals and career development for all group members
  3. Mentors team members for professional and career development
  4. Contribute to setting of strategic directions for R&D and business initiatives
  5. Recognize other’s abilities and delegate technical responsibilities as appropriate. 
  6. Effectively uses technical and leadership skills to influence and direct technical programs to achieve success.
  7. Advocate for project resources, as needed. Presents findings, recommendations and cost benefit analysis to upper management.
  8. Identify needs for new skills in the team and make recommendations to address them   
  9. Actively promotes safety within the team and across the company
  10. Effective communicator with individuals from diverse scientific or non-scientific backgrounds.
  11. Comfortable in communicating findings  and recommendations to  upper management and other stakeholders.
  12. Strong analytical and critical thinking skills with ability to make decisions with ambiguous or incomplete information. 
  13. Coordinates with commercial teams to prioritize projects and set timelines
  14. Represent Sartomer publically through scientific presentations, publications, participation at tradeshows or conferences and customer visits.
  15. Establish external network and use internal and external networks to solve problems and accelerate R&D projects. Interface with multiple levels within Company, and international colleagues.  Understand, influence and engage internal and/or external customer and scientific community.
  16. Collaborate with internal teams, e.g. Technical (Platform and Pilot), Supply-Chain, EHS, Manufacturing and Commercial teams to develop new products and processes, from lab scale to pilot scale to manufacturing. 
  17. Works to break down barriers and create novel solutions at cross-functional level.

 

Technical (50%):

  1. Make individual contributions to develop new photo-curable material technologies for 3D Printing Technologies like Stereo-, DLP and Multi-Jet Printing, directed towards improvements in physical, mechanical and thermal properties.
  2. Identify opportunities for establishing intellectual property positions and actively pursue patent filings.
  3. Monitor scientific, patent and trade literature to stay current on latest technologies, identify relevant emerging technologies and leverage information to constantly advance Sartomer technology development roadmap.
  4.  Collaborate across organizational boundaries, e.g. other Arkema BUs, academic groups and national labs, to further group’s R&D initiatives.  
  5. Expert knowledge in photo-cure materials, structure-property-performance relationships.
  6. Has deep mechanistic understanding of 3D printing processes with ability to propose and evaluate innovative technologies to meet market requirements. 
  7. Collaborates across organizational boundaries, e.g. other Arkema BUs, academic groups and national labs, to further group’s R&D initiatives.  

 

CONTEXT AND ENVIRONMENT

The Sartomer Group is wholly owned by Arkema Inc, a global specialty chemical company, focused on innovating solutions to market identified challenges.  Sartomer is recognized as the premier brand in the area of specialty oligomers and monomers servicing the graphic arts, coatings, adhesives, as well as other assorted markets, with a concentration in UV cure applications and chemistry.  Our technical expertise in the UV cure area has attracted interest in one form or another with most of the key manufacturers of additive manufacturing materials and equipment.   6. Generate and distribute technical reports.
  7. Document discoveries and file invention records as appropriate.

 

REQUIRED EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS/WORK EXPERIENCE

  1. Ph.D. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Polymer Science or related field with strong innovation focus is desired.
  2. Minimum of 8 years chemical industry experience.
  3. Photocure 3D Printing industry experience is strongly preferred.
  4. Demonstrated leadership ability  
  5. Seasoned professional level understanding, interpretation, and application of theory, concepts, and knowledge in chemistry, chemical engineering, polymer science, or other specialized field.
  6. Prior demonstrated success in developing innovative materials solutions to challenging problems.
  7. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to present results clearly and concisely to variety of audiences.
  8. Excellent interpersonal skills. The ability to work and think as both a team leader and as an independent contributor.
