Job Dimensions:

The Senior Scientist/Group Leader is responsible for leading a small team tasked with identifying, developing and commercializing new materials technologies within key growth markets for the 3D Business in Sartomer Americas and identifying new development directions based on understanding of the technical needs of the 3D printing industry. 


The successful candidate will play a key role in the success of Sartomer’s 3D Printing R&D team as a Subject Matter Expert and R&D team leader.  The position requires strong leadership skills in addition to a commitment to innovation, a strong attention to detail and quality work, willingness to mentor and coach less experienced team members, and a deep understanding of photocure 3D printing technologies and markets.  To accomplish team goals close collaboration across functions and regions, ability to work as part of team –either as contributor or team leader, and excellent influencing and communication skills are necessary. 


While based in Sartomer’s Technical Center site in Exton, the role will require occasional travel – both domestic and international – to other Sartomer/Arkema locations, customer or partner sites and to conferences.


Key Activities and Responsibilities:

New Product Development - 3D Printing (60%)

Innovate and execute product developments based on business strategies in selected markets

    • Explore, Identify and develop new photocuring materials and applications for 3D Printing
    • Work directly with legal team to determine IP landscape, ensure strategic IP differentiation and pursue IP filings aggressively
    • Work closely with commercial team to develop business cases for new projects
    • Manage projects from ideation through commercialization using Sartomer’s NPD process
    • Lead regional and global technical project teams
    • Drive customer/market based development projects though full commercialization
    • Use market and technical knowledge and insights to identify new development directions and define projects
    • Collaborate with the Tech Service team to support customer needs and launch new products
    • Provide launch support for new products by supporting generation of documentation, demonstration tools, videos and training materials.
    • Promote new products and developments through presentations and written articles
    • Communicates effectively across functions and at all levels within and outside the 3D Printing team
    • Influences senior management and other stakeholders using data-driven arguments and analysis
    • Identify and quantify product and process improvement opportunities.
    • Plan and monitor scale-up and industrial trials to produce new materials.
    • Represent the company in trade and technical organizations, tradeshows and conferences.


Team Leadership and Mentoring (30%)

  • Leads a small team of scientists, chemists and engineers in 3D printing materials development
  • Manages team’s projects and portfolio in conjunction with senior R&D and business management
  • Responsible for team members’ career development, goal setting and performance appraisals
  • Drives team’s safety activities and performance
  • Represents the R&D team internal and external cross-functional meetings
  • Serve as a subject matter expert by providing guidance to various groups such as R&D, Sales, Technical Service, Business Development, Marketing
  • Mentor R&D and Tech Service team members in R&D best practices and safety
  • Set a strong example for safe personal work practices and enhancement of safety practices
  • Be a role model for use of use of advanced data analysis and planning to solve problems and complete projects
  • Identify root cause of complex customer/product problems. Develops analytical strategies and executes action plans to resolve causes.
  • As a subject matter expert applies fundamental knowledge to relate how process and material characteristics influence performance properties on the finished products.
  • Identify the best applicable solution for an application by thoroughly understanding the customer need, testing and analyzing results.
  • Diagnose customer application issues and help solve in an expeditious manner.
  • Share results of work in an organized manner to systematically move research forward in a coordinated effort.
  • Prioritize projects based on business potential and strategic fit.

Collaboration and End Use Promotion (10%) 

  • Identify, approach and engage Universities, Consulting Consortia and Entrepreneurial free agents for collaborative developments and innovation
  • Build strategic alliances with target customers to expedite product development and commercialization. Communicate results to customers through written reports and presentations.
  • Identify and recommend potential strategic partners
  • Collaborate with other Arkema BUs to identify and leverage opportunities for cross-BU developments.
  • Build strong network within the Arkema R&D community regionally and globally
  • Publishes articles and promotes Sartomer at industry events by writing articles, and attending conferences
  • In collaboration with the business and marketing teams and as appropriate: propose and implement branding strategies
  • Presents at conferences and/or conventions as a subject matter expert
  • Have competency of taking incoming technical requests for immediate response to end users or customers requesting recommendations or general technical assistance.


Context and Environment:

  • Supports the site HES policy and complies with all regulatory and internal requirements
  • Participates in HES activities provided by site management and Arkema Inc. (e.g., Behavioral Base Safety, SafeStart, etc.)
  • Lead and promote safe work practices by word and actions
  • Supports and promotes the reporting of all health, safety, environmental, near-miss, accident or injury incidents
  • Willingness to travel outside of home base as needed including internationally
  • Be efficient at documentation of activities as in completing a monthly report within deadlines and writing periodic call reports and copying the appropriate Business functions when key information is learned.  Be well prepared and ready to present for periodic strategic summary meetings.
  • Be cognizant of patent situations and policies related to legal conformance in business related communications.  Also, be aware of potential liability issues associated with our claims of performance in end use applications. 
  • Obey corporate policies and procedures such as safety, publication review, expense reporting, and competitive situations. 


Required Education/Qualifications/Work Experience:

    • PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Materials Science.
    • Minimum of eight (8) years of industrial product development experience.
    • Minimum five (5) years experience in Photocure 3D Printing materials development and processing
    • Microsoft Office proficient, specifically with Power Point, Excel and other computer communication programs.
