Situation in organization

The position reports to an R&D Scientist in Kynar® Coatings R&D, with active regular input and coaching from other scientists in the group. 

Job dimensions

The person in this position will work closely with the Kynar® coatings team to conduct laboratory research on topics of importance to the business. Projects can include plant support, technical service, gated research projects, and exploratory projects. Typically, this person will be working on a few projects at a time in support of a R&D Scientist.

  1. Conduct laboratory experiments in the area of fluoropolymer-based coatings including: formulate solvent-borne and water-borne coatings, apply coatings onto substrates (e.g., drawdown, spray), and conduct various tests on wet paints and dry films (e.g., physical/mechanical/weathering).
  2. Accurately document all observations and results in electronic laboratory notebook. Organize and analyze data to explain conclusions to an internal audience. Write simple summaries of results.
  3. Follow established procedures. Recommend and test improvement to methods as needed.
  4. Troubleshoot equipment malfunctions. Recommend and test improvements to equipment as needed. 
  5. Propose explanations and solutions to deviations from expected results.
  6. Assist with the development of new procedures and test methods.
  7. Order laboratory supplies and maintain good housekeeping of labs.
  8. Participate in safety programs and conduct all work in accordance with site and corporate safety guidelines.

Context and environment

The Kynar® resins business is a global business, with both global and regional customers.  The King of Prussia labs are the worldwide center of excellence for this business.  The coatings technical group interfaces directly with business development colleagues, with various other functions within Arkema, and with technical personnel at customer locations. 


  1. Develop expertise in fluoropolymer coatings formulating, application, and testing.
  2. Participate with direct supervisor in design of tasks.
  3. Meet agree-upon deadlines.
  4. Form strong relationships with internal colleagues (e.g., synthesis, analytical, EHS, business)
  5. Contribute to reports for internal distribution with editorial review.
  6. Prepare SOPs and act as equipment owner, overseeing and training other users.
  7. Maintaining a safe, accident-free workplace and carry out safety training of colleagues as required.

Qualifications / experience required

  1. Associates degree in technology field
  2. 3-10 years of experience in a chemical laboratory setting, preferably in coating formulating and testing.
  3. Proficiency with computer software applications (word processing, spreadsheet, email, etc.)
  4. Ability to follow established procedures, recognize deviations from expected results, and recommend/implement improvements.
  5. Ability to work and think in a team environment.
  6. Good written and verbal communication skills.
