Based at Arkema's Corporate Offices and R&D Center in King of Prussia, PA, the Scientist / Research Scientist is responsible for generating analyses in support of Arkema’s R&D programs, technical service and manufacturing efforts for the North American Business Units.  The data is generated for internal and external customers with little to no supervision.  This position requires hands on laboratory work involving a variety of chromatography and mass spectrometry tools and methods in a dynamic laboratory environment shared with other team members. 
 
Specific job activities include (but are not limited to):

  • Fully engage and participate in Arkema departmental and site wide safety programs and ensures safe laboratory operation, supporting a culture of continuous safety improvement.
  • Work closely with internal customers, project teams and lab colleagues to solve technical problems.
  • Prepare and analyze samples by gas chromatography, liquid chromatography, and gas chromatography/liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry.
  • Analyze and interpret data, and perform additional experiments as needed.
  • Write detailed technical reports and make presentations to communicate results to multiple levels within the company.
  • Maintain laboratory notebooks and appropriate records.
  • Multitask effectively and manage dynamic workload including routine work and multiple projects.
  • Responsible for instrument maintenance and upkeep by performing maintenance independently and interfacing with instrument vendors as needed.
  • Attend conferences and monitor scientific and trade literature to stay current on latest technologies, identify relevant technologies for laboratory, and work to acquire them.
  • Propose and execute ideas for lab improvements and develop new separation methodologies.
  • Present/publish work externally in journals or at conferences.
  • Contribute to the innovation culture at Arkema by exhibiting curiosity, entrepreneurial spirit, and collaboration with others to constantly improve our methods and products.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • PhD in Chemistry with prior industrial experience highly desired OR a Master’s degree in Chemistry and a minimum of 15 years of industrial experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle and work with hazardous materials, and to work safely and independently in a chemical laboratory environment.
  • Theoretical understanding of chromatography and mass spectrometry theory.
  • Extensive experience developing and validating methods for quantitative analysis of small molecules using GC and LC with various detectors.
  • Extensive experience developing and validating methods for quantitative/qualitative analysis of small molecules using GC/MS and LC/MS with different ionization sources including EI, CI, ESI, APcI, and APPI.
  • Ability to interpret mass spectral data independently and using libraries to elucidate structures.
  • Experience with various sample preparation techniques including dissolution, liquid-liquid extraction, microwave assisted extraction, and solid phase extraction.
  • Experience training others on operation of chromatographic and mass spectrometry instrumentation and implementation of methods and with mentoring junior team members.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair chromatography and mass spectrometry instrumentation as needed.
  • Excellent communication skills, ability to deliver results independently, a strong desire to collaborate, capability to prioritize workload and problem solve is critical.
  • Experience working with polymers and pyrolysis-GC/MS is a plus.
