Job Dimensions

The Scientist/Research scientist position is based in King of Prussia, PA at Arkema’s Corporate Offices

and R&D center.  This position reports to the Manager of Plastic Additives, Americas in the Arkema

Coating Resin Division.   The position will be responsible for identifying opportunities to grow the existing

Product portfolio and leading the development/commercialization of new products that meet customer

needs.  The Scientist/Research Scientist will work with customers to identify their unmet needs and provide

innovative solutions for them, along with working with them on application development projects.  Multiple

projects must be managed concurrently.  The Scientist/Research Scientist will have a leadership position

with direct and active involvement with the commercial teams, customers, process technology and

manufacturing.  There is also an expectation to have routine, global technical exchanges with teams in

France.  This position has significant external visibility and networking opportunities with customers,

academic collaborators, consultants, scientific and technical societies, trade associations and other industry

groups. 

 

 Key Activities and Responsibilities

  • Work with customers, global technical and commercial teams to identify and start new R&D projects that are consistent with business goals.  Regulary submits new project ideas to further innovation. 
  • Lead R&D projects through commercialization using Arkema’s stage gate system.  Designs project plans, technical approaches, timelines, deliverables, and IP strategies.  Directs cross-functional, global project teams in the execution of project plans.  Conducts laboratory work as needed to help the team meet timelines. 
  • Ensure high level of technical excellence through sound use of scientific principles including design of experiment, critical thought, creative problem solving, analytical thinking, open and honest communication of best practices. 
  • Work with customers, commercial team, and engineers to support the adoption of current the product portfolio into new applications and formulations. 
  • Manage multiple projects/programs concurrently.
  • Identifies and establishes opportunities for technical exchange and collaboration between internal and external groups to enhance capabilities and knowledge. 
  • Effectively represents the department at multiple levels within the company. Provide regular updates of individual projects through monthly reviews/reports, technical reviews, stage-gate reviews. 
  • Monitors technical literature to develop strong understanding of relevant external technologies and leverage internal needs. 
  • Up to 25% travel required

     

Required Education/Work Experience

  • Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Polymer Science or Material Science/Engineering required.
  • 1-5 years of industrial/post-doc experience with strong and practical knowledge/experience in polymer application development and synthesis preferred.
  • A demonstrated track record of technical success, technical knowledge, publications, and patents.
  • Proficient in computer softwares: Microsoft Office, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Experience with design of experiment (DOE) and statistical analysis methodologies

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects or programs concurrently.
  • Ability to document experimental work and ensures the timely filing of invention disclosures and patent applications.
