Based at Arkema's Corporate Offices and R&D Center in King of Prussia, PA, the Senior HES Specialist is responsible for providing direction, education, and support the King of Prussia site’s Loss Control Programs, including Environmental, Occupational Safety and Health, Industrial Hygiene, and Process Safety.  He/she serves as an HES program administrator and provides technical regulatory guidance to the site employees and management on HES-related matters.  The Senior HES Specialist provides support for key HES initiatives and risk management practices. 


Specific job activities include (but are not limited to):


Environmental (30%)

  • Serve as the environmental focal point for waste characterizations, waste disposal, LDR, fugitive emissions, RCRA, etc.
  • Hazardous and non-hazardous waste coordination and shipments.
  • Interaction with government agencies and ensure permits and license are up to date.  Reporting for environmental, fire, chemicals, emissions, waste water.
  • Maintain all safety and environmental records.
  • Serve as site Storm Water Pollution Prevention Program leader.
  • Serve as the department's Compliance Task Tool & Event Driven Tasks Coordinator.
  • Participate in missed compliance tasks investigations and the development of corrective actions.
  • Serve as Arkema Integrated Management Systems Leader and sub-element owner.
  • Manager site compliance calendar and ensure inspection readiness.
  • Participate in multi-media environmental Risk Assessments for special projects.
  • Monthly compilation and analysis of plant operating data to ensure compliance with operating permits and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensures timely reporting of necessary releases, permit excursions, etc. to regulatory agencies.


Health and Safety (70%)

  • Participate in efforts to improve HES performance by eliminating injuries, exposures, spills, and emissions.
  • Assist with the preparation of all HES reports for Arkema and regulatory agencies.
  • Participate in and provide data for HES audits.
  • Consult with HE&S expertise group to obtain clear interpretations of site-specific regulatory process, regulations, laws and associated procedures and update site applicability matrix.
  • Effectively deliver the regulatory guidance, required documentation, and training to the appropriate groups.
  • Recognize and analyze HES risks present in the work environment and develops programs, procedures and /or work processes to mitigate those risks.
  • Assist site Business Units in complying with HES requirements and effective implementation of the various global HES management systems, work processes, and data management systems.
  • Ensure safety training is scheduled and performed; conduct safety training as appropriate.
  • Participate or lead incident investigations and corrective action processes.
  • In partnership with HR (and Risk Management, when appropriate), provide HES guidance and expertise to support the return to work process (i.e. evaluation and implementation of reasonable accommodations for both occupational and non-occupational leaves of absence).
  • Schedule and facilitate the KoP site Blood Drive and Annual Flu Shots. 
  • Schedule, coordinate and manage records for bi-annual physicals of lab workers, ERT members and Pilot Plant employees. 
  • Sustain and continually improve Behavior Based Safety program.
  • Assist with implementation of ISO 45001, if deemed necessary.
  • Serve as IMPACT Facilitator.
  • Monthly safety reporting on IMPACT and Sustainability Reports.
  • Assist with the management of contractors, and consultants as needed.
  • Assist with the administration of programs and inspections involved in company Risk Management and Insurance programs.
  • Oversee emergency response initiatives including: ERT training/preparedness, adherence to the ICRP, off-site notifications, area response team equipment/training, etc.
  • Implement and manage industrial hygiene programs for site.
  • Keep current with constantly changing laws and regulations and provides guidance to the plant in the interpretation of the requirements and develops programs to meet the regulations.
  • Support site safety and environmental programs at the KOP facility.



  • Minimum of a B.S. degree in Environmental Engineering, Occupational Safety and Health, or other related technical field plus 10 years of experience in the day-to-day management of environmental and/or safety and health. 
  • Prior experience supporting locations that include sizable laboratory, research and office environments is highly desirable.
  • Certified Safety Professional and/or Certified Industrial Hygienist preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of federal and state environmental, health and safety regulations
  • Strong computer aptitude in the use of HES applications and the Microsoft Office suite.
  • Technical experience with safety and health management systems development, oversight and auditing.
  • Adept in the development and implementation of HES work processes.
  • Strong leadership ability
  • Excellent communication ability (written and verbal).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including good coaching skills
  • Strong planning and organizational skills.
  • Adaptable to change.    
  • Ability to develop and implement HES work processes
  • Capacity to work in a multi-cultural English speaking environment and collaborate with global colleagues.
  • Able to influence others through proven project and change management
  • Must be able to effectively communicate and interact with all levels, from shop floor to middle and upper management.
