This position reports directly to the North Kansas City Plant Site Manager and supervises all plant operations employees.  The Production Leader works with the plant engineer, mechanics and management team to enhance operating units at the North Kansas City Plant.

 

Job Dimensions

  • This position is responsible for all functions of operations management related to day to day staffing and production issues of a chemical manufacturing facility.
  • Ensures that all operations management processes are adhering to the site’s requirements outlined in AIMS, which include aspects of ISO 9001, OHSAS 18001, and Responsible Care.
  • Supports the site HESQ policy and complies with all regulatory and internal requirements
  • Participates in HES activities provided by site management and Arkema Inc. (e.g., Behavioral Base Safety, SafeStart, etc.)
  • Supports and promotes the reporting of all health, safety, environmental, near-miss, accident or injury incidents
  • Complies with all standard procedures and work instructions, aka SP, SOP, PWI, TM, to ensure productivity, quality assurance and cost effectiveness.
  • Identifies and communicates potential gains or possible improvements to the management system.
  • 5-10% travel to different sites and Business Unit office

 

Key Activities and Responsibilities

Loss Control

  • Ensures plant, business unit and corporate developed policies and procedures are implemented and enforced to promote the plant safety beliefs and advance safety as a core value.
  • Performs Accident/Incident investigations for all safety, quality and environmental incidents. Manages corrective actions for these using the Impact database.
  • Manages all components of AIMS element 4.9. Support all other AIMS initiatives.
  • Supports all loss control programs, such as BBS, Safestart, JSA, Starmap etc
  • Acts as incident commander during plant emergencies if Site Manager and HSE leader are unavailable.

 

Operations

  • Directs, supervises and manages production employees; motivates workforce for high productivity and accountability.
  • Responsible for efficient use of manpower and scheduling of OT as needed to minimize costs and maintain efficient completion of the production schedule
  • Works with the Scheduler to ensure that the production schedule is kept current and raw materials are kept in stock
  • Ensures that all SAP and recordkeeping activities are completed in real time related to batch planning and confirmation
  • Works with Customer Service and Scheduler to ensure on time shipments
  • Ensures daily morning meeting is conducted to coordinate safety, production, supply chain and maintenance activities
  • Develops, write and implement new operating procedures. Review and revise existing procedures on an annual basis.
  • Monitors and manages MUV and stock adjustments. Identifies opportunities to eliminate sources of variance.
  • Acts as site leader in the absence of the plant manager
  • Provides cover for planning operations and SAP transactions in the absence of the logistics leader.

 

Plant Improvement

  • Takes responsibility for plant OAU performance. Tracks, reports, identifies and implements initiatives to reduce downtime and improve cycle times.
  • Manages small improvement projects for the production facility

 

People Management

  • Ensures employees remain up to date on all training requirements. Train operators following incidents or as part of a refresher training program. Assess operator competence following employment and on an ongoing basis.
  • Understands the Union Contract and ensures that it is adhered to with all plant activities
  • Ensures proper attendance and on time arrival and issues discipline as needed for attendance problems
  • Maintains time sheet records and ensures that eTime is accurate and submitted on time every two weeks

 

Required Education/Work Experience

  • B.S. in Chemical Engineering/Chemistry with a minimum of 5 years’ experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • 1 year of supervisory experience
  • Good working knowledge of plant processes and batch operations, prefer chemical plant experience
  • Working knowledge of SAP preferred
  • Intermediate skills in MS office

  • Ability to assess and resolve emergencies and to develop contingency plans under stressful situations
